There is a scripting solution for this. Gerald Singelmann wrote two java scripts "imageName2Library.jsxbin" and "updateNameinLibrary.jsxbin" to ease the pain. Drag a placed file to the library and immediately start the script "imageName2Library.jsxbin". The library item will get the name of the placed file. With "updateNameinLibrary.jsxbin" you can choose among the file names of all selected files on the page to update the "Untitled" tag in the library.
You can follow the discussion in the German language at:

http://www.hilfdirselbst.ch/foren/Bibliothek_Problem_Indesign_CS4_P390265.html#390265

Both scripts are available at www.hilfdirselbst.ch, but to download them you have to register as a Premium Member which involves a small fee.

You must've missed the press release where they talked about this. You have to pay extra if you want graphics automatically named in the library.

It's called the "PlusPack" or "ProPack" or something.

At least you have the Library feature. Some users inadvertently got the Lite edition which comes with only three features: Pages, text frames, and the print dialog box.
